Eastern Diamondback

Was coming in the driveway this afternoon from shopping, and as I’m pulling in, there right by my car (I’m in the Explorer), that has not been moved in at least 6 months - hence the tires going flat and cobwebs, is a small Eastern Diamondback rattlesnake. :D

So, I stopped the truck, jumped out to look at him (or her) and then remembered that I had my new small Canon PowerShot SD1100IS Camera in the side of my purse.. so I grabbed it to try it out.

Now, the quality of video is not that great, not because of camera, but because this is my first video and I wasn’t sure how to compress it, if I should compress it, what type of file to save it as, etc. This is a learning process for me. Video went from over 400MB to less than 20MB with compression. So, quality has absolutely been sacrificed while I learn. But still, I was thrilled when I saw the snake.

My Mom kept wanting to hurry and get him out from under the car, I wanted her to stop, so that I could get video! :)

I’ve never embedded a video before, so here is to trying another something new.

Tell me how the video works for you, is compression too much, did you have trouble opening because of file type, or any other problems with it. Thanks!

Oooooooo..Purty! Looks to be a male as they have the more pronounced diamnond shape in the their markings.. Females are more heart shaped. Looks the cooler weather had it very sluggish. How many rattles did it have? What did ya do with it? It is a beautiful snake though..

    Yes, it was beautiful!

I don’t know whether male or female, just as long as it didn’t crawl up into my car engine or tire-well, or make its way into garage. Last time an EDR got into garage, I had to clear off a 5-shelf storage area just to get to it. I was not happy. :)

We could only see 2 rattles, but honestly didn’t get too close to confirm. Length was about 2-2 1/4 feet long.

Normally, we put them in buckets and take them out the back gate and put them in the woods, but, this little one wasn’t cooperating in the least. In front of the car is a tree, with lots of plants underneath it and it went into there. We looked and I saw it curled up by plant, but decided to just leave it and hope that it would make its way out to woods again. :)

    laughs…

I am Not running it over if I can help it! :P

My grandfather was like, “you didn’t kill it?!” Uhmm, noooo.

Yes, hands were shaky, only because Momma was taking that stick and scooting snake right at me! You’d be shaky too. :D

Not on the video, but as we got him out from under car, he was not happy camper, coiled and got into strike position. It was cool though, because as we watched, he flattened his torso out, which is always neat to watch.

Looked at your blog last night, thought I would leave comments later today, was late when I looked. But yes, she makes a much prettier model/assistant than his assistant. ;)

You ready for cooler and cold packs back yet, I’m ready for some fresh clean snow!! :D It’s cold up there in yonder Grays.

Wow! I have come across a lot of snakes when out chasing in FL, but never in my driveway like that. Cool video!

    Hey Jeff! :o)

I’ll have to get you to teach me how to do the video part correctly. This was just off my point-n-shoot camera, with the HDV videocamera, I have no clue how to do it.

First time in driveway, that we’ve seen rattlesnake, but have seen them out back, which is cool. And had one in the garage too! :o) We knew they were still around, cuz we have indigo’s all over - which are gorgeous!
